Susan Nguyen is a third-year medical student at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. She grew up in Orange County, California, and received her bachelor’s degree in Global Health from University of California San Diego before entering medical school. Studying Global Health as an undergraduate sparked her interest in health systems and the mechanics of care delivery, an interest she now pursues through quality improvement work. Her current research examines uptake of HLA-B*58:01 screening and disparities in severe cutaneous adverse reactions before and after the 2020 ACR allopurinol guidelines. She works with Dr. Nehal Shah, MD, in the VCU Division of Rheumatology, Allergy, and Immunology, and plans to pursue a career in internal medicine.
